Could someone let me know if it is possible to create a portal that allows ANY or multiple accounts login and manage their account personal details and to upload documents. I see this may be acheived for individual accounts

I would like for the to use email address as login

what do you mean by multiple accounts ? portal is designed for portal users meaning you could create 3 portals users from 3 contacts of a specific account and each would be able to login separately with ability to customise each portal's user role. Yes you can allow the portal user to create and upload documents.

When creating a portal user just use their email address as username and it should work fine.
