Auto Populate fields from Contact to Opportunity

I want to auto populate phone number field from Contact to Opportunity before saving. So duplicate check will happen perfectly.
As of now it's fetching after a Opportunity is saved using a workflow "after created". In this scenario duplicate check is not happening because they are not entering the Phone number manually while creating an Opportunity.

If I understood you correctly, then for this functionality you should simply use the field functionality with the Foreign type.
