Item field width in the "List (item)" view

In the latest version of Espo, it is not possible to change the width of the item field in the "List (item)" view, there is not enough space to see the full Product name. This feature was available in versions prior to 8. Please bring back this feature

As a temporary workaround you can edit the layout file.

is there anyway to make the layout file custimazation upgrade safe?
I have tried changing the layout file and changes doesn't apply.

If you edit a layout in the custom folder it's upgrade safe. Maybe you did change a wrong layout file.

Sorry didn't make it clear. What i meant is to change default layout e.g kanban layout i want to extend it so that i could allow a user to add an icon or allow user to show/hide labels on the kanban item next to the value of each field (name : some name). When i checked it seems that this was not possible, not sure if i missed something.
