imap error 500 smtp working

when running latest version on xampp/windows emails work fine but on my host, smtp works and sends ok but I cannot access imap to gmail. It just returns error 500.
thought it was an ssl problem but on another server with SSL certified -same problem.
Any help would be appreciated

Thanks for your help. Much Appreciated. Problem was host server turns off IMAP by default!!!! now fixed at the host and working fine.
