Campaigns and Mass email

I'm a bit confused on how the "Mass Emails" Tie into the "Campaigns" It appears you can schedule a mass email without doing a campaign, is this correct? The 2 have some features like start and end dates and different statuses that make it hard to determine if a campaign is even needed to send mass emails and if so what is the relationship between the two.

Technically yes, it's possible to send w/o a campaign. Please let us know if you manage to send w/o a campaign. The only thing (I guess) that won't work is a campaign log.
