How to troubleshoot import of a big csv being stuck?

How does the idle/cron import work? Is it based on the Import Logs? If I delete the Import Log is the import stopped? How can I stop and try again the import with a smaller file?

The job failed (nothing in the logs) and the import stayed 'Pending' forever. I don't know the cause but the list was big (~23k leads), maybe some value was not valid and it stopped the whole import. So I deleted the imported entities, the import log and successfully completed the import using multiple smaller-sized CSVs. Now I can delete the failed job (I only found one) and be done.
