Automatically Save Drafts?

Is there a way to have the software automatically save drafts whenever I start to compose an email?

no, you need to click Save Draft button

As I just lost one hour of work because my browser crashed, may I ask whether this feature is planned?

Need to be in feature request and you more likely to get a chance of it becoming one.

One of the add-on on my webbrowser I use to prevent this situation (for many other website) is call: "Form History Control", there probably other type of similar addon if you don't use Firefox.
