Our defualt username syntax is Firstname Surname with a space between. Espo seems to enforce a firstname_suranme... Is there a reason as it creates inconsistencies we don't have elsewhere...

User Name is used for login and has to be unique
The tooltip of this field says "Letters a-z, numbers 0-9, dots, hyphens, @-signs and underscores are allowed."

Undersood, but most system usernames support spaces as well. Could you allow spaces?
