Error 500 on upgrading and sending email

I am receiving an "Error 500" when I try to upload the upgrade for 4.2.6 to 4.2.7. I receive that same error when trying to send email from the CRM. I was actually upgrading to see if it woudl resolve the email issue.

Several previous upgrades went through fine, but were much smaller. This one is about 14MB. php.ini is set to 50M on max upload size. What could be causing this?
