Search for empty date values

I have defined a custom field of type "date" in the opportunities entity. Now, I would like to search for all opportunities where this field is empty, but I can't figure out, how to do that. When I add the field to the search criteria its drop-down menu only contains entries for comparing the date value with other (fixed) date values or a number of days. Am I missing something? Or is there really no way to do that?

BTW, the same problem exists with other field types, e.g. bool and text. There seems to be no way to search for unchecked or empty values.
