If you zoom out on the browser text size, you can gain screen real-estate for wider lists. Except that the page width for list views (and reports) is constrained.
I understand why it would be there for view & edit pages since there's few columns and they are vertical reading - but lists and reports are horizontal reading, and there's benefits in either a wider screen or zooming out to see more of the content of each field when there's more columns.
