Display nicknames when users are mentioned instead of full name

My organization has started using the mention function (@user) recently, and we find it quite annoying that both the first and last name is displayed. It would be great if there was a separate field for nicknames in the users preference pane, that can be used instead when people are mentioned. Has anyone else been thinking about this?
