Add SKU Field to the Product

First of all, we would like to thank you for the improved inventory management functionality and enhanced product pricing features. These improvements are greatly appreciated!

However, we would like to request adding an SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) field to the standard Product module. SKU is a fundamental product attribute used in many business systems. While we could create a custom field ourselves, we are concerned about potential conflicts or duplication issues when using your official Inventory Management extension in the future. Why is the SKU field important?

• Unique Product Identification: SKU helps businesses track products efficiently, reducing errors in inventory and sales processes.
• Streamlined Order Management: Many businesses rely on SKU codes for quick product lookup, order processing, and invoicing.
• Integration with External Systems: If companies integrate EspoCRM with ERP, e-commerce, or POS systems, having a standard SKU field ensures smoother data synchronization.
• Scalability & Best Practices: Since SKU is a widely used parameter across industries, having it as a default field in EspoCRM’s Product module aligns with best practices.

Would it be possible to include the SKU field as a standard part of the Product module in future releases?

Hi,

Thanks for feedback. While it was considered to add SKU before, but after some research and analysis we had deceived not to add it. At least not to add it as a simple varchar field for a some time. Note that SKU for is not a standard. Different companies will use it and format it differently. I remember that some well established ERPs don't have this field out of the box, relying on custom fields.

Note that since we use prefixes for custom fields, the future naming conflict is not possible anymore.

While SKU is a product record itself. SKU numbers are often generated automatically using specific rule adopted by a company. Having a regular default varchar field does not do a favor as it imposes some restrictions to the system and the future scalability.
