Record Remains in Workflow After No Longer Meeting Criteria?

I have a workflow set up to automatically send delayed emails to a lead and update the status when they are of a certain status. I was expecting that when that lead's status was changed, it would no longer meet the criteria of that workflow, so it would be removed from future actions, but that does not appear to be the case. The scheduled activities still occur on that record. Any suggestions for how to workaround this?
