Set quoteitems itemlist's quote_id to item's quote_id that was selected from a scope?

Once user selects an item from the scope and saves/updates, i want to grab the quote_id assigned to that item in quoteitem, and assign that value to item selected in it's own entity. Not sure if i should do it from the client/server side. thought server side in quoteitems was the better choice,but unable to assign the quote_id.
