creating a many to many relation between same type of entity leads to 500 error

As in the topic - I need to create a link where same-type entities (namely - contacts) can be somehow designated as related to each other (similar to Redmine "related to" type of relation). The use case is that you met someone through someone etc. LinkedIn for example has this type of relation.

Am I doing it wrong and I should be using a different type of relation? How to mark contacts as related to each other?

In any case, such a relation should either not be allowed or somehow be protected from creating errors.
